Developer Transitioning to Any New Role 😁 Ah, the rollercoaster of stepping into a new job as a developer! → Day 1: "I'm so excited to learn new things!" → Week 1: "Why is their codebase so... 'unique'?" → Month 1: "Wait, how is this even running in production?" And let’s not forget: → Struggling to set up local environments that somehow only work on "Jeff’s machine." → Debugging legacy code written in "who-knows-what" by "who-knows-when." → Pretending to understand half the acronyms thrown around in meetings. I think all the neat and practical applications of AI are being overshadowed by all the weird ones. I also think that local AI is the way forward for the majority of people. Here is my setup right now. I have Ollama installed as a server on my workstation, and it is the key to my workflow. I integrate it with VSCode using LLama coder and codellama model. I integrate it with firefox using PageAssist. You can use a sidebar and have it inspect whatever page you are using. More opportunities will reveal themselves as time goes on. Things I am excited about include bitnet models.

Recruiters/ decision makers in my network, this questions for yall. How much does a 4- year degree for software engineering matter these days? Think of this from the perspective of someone that was looking to transition into a software dev role. Is a 4 year degree required? or would you recommend an intense bootcamp (or the like) that lasts a year with that gives the person a portfolio to show off at the end. Would love to hear your thoughts and reasoning behind this. Or alternatives that may not be apparent. Edit: this is not a “let’s do away with education” post, just asking for a friend more than anything. 😆

I've been in the Software Development industry for 10 years and it has never been like this before. I have recruiters wanting me to lie on my resume, wanting me to "hide" my employment gap and telling other recruiters to reach out to me for positions requiring experience in technologies I never said I had experience in. while it might limit my potential opportunities, I think I need to carefully pick a few recruiters to work with. Ones I trust and who I can tell believe they can find me something based on my actual experience. #ITRecruiting #Recruiting #SoftwareDevelopment

Coding bootcamps are useless. So are computer science degrees. You aren't paid for the sheet of paper you get when you graduate. You're paid for your mastery of the topics represented by the paper. Expecting to get a good job or a high salary simply because you've been given the paper is ridiculous. I'll say it again. You're paid for your mastery of the topics represented by the paper. Do you need to master computer science to get a degree? Definitely not. Do you need to master software development to graduate a coding bootcamp? Again, definitely not. You can't achieve mastery by following a tutorial that someone else wrote. You achieve mastery by *writing the tutorial*. Actually, you achieve mastery by writing 100 tutorials. That means building a tolerance for rolling up your sleeves and slogging through a challenging problem with no obvious solutions. That means building things that are complicated enough that there are no StackOverflow answers and ChatGPT can't give you an answer. That means learning to manage the emotion of "I'm stuck, out of ideas, and ready to quit." That's how you build mastery. You want the sweet job with the nice benefits and high salary? Write the tutorials.

IN over 30 years of working as a contract developer, DBA, architect, both as a consultant and direct hire, I have been on MANY job searches over SEVERAL decades. I HAVE NEVER had so many appointments COMPLETELY BLOWN OFF, rescheduled DAYS after recruiters blown me off without even a SMS, Email or call, and HR Reps and others COMPLETELY missed conference calls and appointments that were scheduled, often with NO notification, warning or even follow up. Some don't even bother to get back to me to offer an explanation, yet have the AUDACITY to contact me AGAIN when they get another opportunity. Is THIS the level of professionalism we can expect today in the IT arena now? Has the obvious malaise and apathy prevalent through the business world and the total lack of professional comportment in general seeped down to the point where this is what we can expect going forward? I am appalled at how this has become commonplace. No amount of skill, sales or charm can make up for simple lack of courtesy or professionalism, but I guess its a sign of the times. Sadly, some of you will just write me off as a "boomer", because you never lived in a world where PEOPLE SAID WHAT THEY DID AND DID WHAT THEY SAID. I weep for the future.

Please provide more details about the position so that it's easier for candidates to know if they are a fit or not. If your intent is to build a pool of candidates, please be candid about it and openly say "Need iOS developer to build a pool of candidates". Believe me, they will still apply.

What is the best combination of references for a job application? Curious to hear thoughts on this, and again especially from people involved in the hiring process. I had a conversation with a student recently who felt it would be best to have recommendations from three professors, and particularly ones who knew the student from very recent classes. I wasn’t as sure that this was necessary or even necessarily beneficial. But I don’t know. What factors make a good reference portfolio? Do people expect an undergraduate student to have three solid references from school who can speak directly to their expertise in their field? Should a student specifically look for more diversity, like two professors and a head counselor from the camp where they had their most recent summer job? A successful aunt or uncle who’s known them their whole life and will speak on their behalf? Is a professor from an advanced class more valuable than one from an introductory class? A current one more valuable than a previous one? Etc., etc. What makes one reference better or worse than another, and what’s a good combination?
